      <image:title>About - Design and build</image:title>
<image:caption>Over 20 years of garden design and build I have created many garden spaces and always learning as I do. I like to remain hands-on, as the best information about the new garden space always comes from working in it. You discover so much about its environment and how it interacts, from the smallest elements to the biggest! This all goes a long way towards informing and improving the initial design. With ongoing client discussions about works based on this evolving approach and awareness. Ideas about how best to implement the initial agreed design can develop along with it. A richer, better integrated garden is the result. You can speculate about likely scenarios, but until you start digging, you only know so much. We always stay true to the initial concept design, as you can see - concept designs completed. Shorlisted and runner up 2020 UK Pro Landscaper under £25000 Design and Build Awards.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - Our ethos - We believe in sustainability. From initial design ideas right through to the final construction touches, we consider the ecological benefits and impacts of what we do, and always seek to find the right balance. Involving our clients in an open and iterative process built upon trust, allows for the greatest success in achieving this.</image:title>

<image:title>Projects - Meggetland, Edinburgh - Not all trees are saved</image:title>
<image:caption>Three large Leylandii trees were part felled as they cast a lot of shade and took up a lot of garden. Their trunks were saved though (to the confusion of the tree surgeon) and used to support a garden snug built around them, and tucked in behind some existing bamboo. A sunken firepit was constructed from re-used paving which had been removed to install the decking. The cut branches and timber from works has been stored in the snug to season for a year, making a useful habitat and decoration in the meantime.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This north facing hillside and former council wasteground has many local inhabitants including nettles, brambles, willowherb, creeping buttercup, couchgrass, ground elder and bindweed. Digging down during early works revealed ‘sedimentary’ layers of rubbish going down several feet. But in amongst all this was actually really good loamy soil. After discussions with the client, efforts to tame the hillside were sidelined. Instead we took the approach of working alongside the wildness, as a better and more realistic option.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - 'Granton by sea', Edinburgh - Robust construction</image:title>
<image:caption>Good solid robust steps curved for interest and definition, were created as the main feature. Along the climb, a network of small patios offer an opportunity for a seat and view, as well as a ‘base camp’ to tackle the wild hillside from, over the years. A Mediterranean style of planting was chosen to complement the location, and because many of the plants would enjoy the steep tough coastal location.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The brief was a space that can be used on the good days, plenty good days in Winter and if a passing something arrives a sleek roof is there to gather under and keep cooking n talking. A one year old beech hedge is already giving structure and privacy to the courtyard garden and weeping himalayan Birch provides Winter contrast.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Everything is in place for an ideal afternoon of pizza and chat. Just behind us is the oak decking area with comfy seats and further around is more seating and access to the main kitchen. Once the oak pergola has settled is main movement as it seasons, a sleek darkened canopy will be installed to provide shelter from sun and rain …and let the small amount of smoke ( very little at all) from this amazing pizza oven, escape.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Merchiston courtyard kitchen, Edinburgh. - Sunny enclosed spot.</image:title>
<image:caption>The courtyard area around front gate and front door has been given structure with seating, raised beds and pots. It has been softened with the introduction of a variety of different planting at a variety of different heights, chosen to give a feeling of privacy and enclosure whilst also feeling open and inviting for new arrivals to the property. A mature planted beech hedge really adds to this and helps focus view from road through front gate to the front door, making orientation easier, a bench provides structure and shape as well as providing an option should the homeowner take a while to answer the door.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Perfect day for the Oak pergola and pizza oven. Once the Oak has ‘done it’s moving’, a sleek flat roof will be installed to provide shelter from the occassional passing squal (see below). Custom built concrete work tops with larch built storage create a kitchen surround as well as further cooking options such as a plancha using nearby outdoor sockets. All has bee chosen to compliment and tie in with the existing garden and architecture.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The stone terrace acts as the central transition point between garden and clients house lower down the hillside. It gives greater space for usng the studio as well as recreational space on the good days. From the terrace numerous rotes are available either up/down or around the garden, either by the main steps or the numerous little shortcuts and mini steps that have been introduced.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Arthurs Seat hillside garden, Edinburgh. - Access from above.</image:title>
<image:caption>Easier access through the garden was an important brief and in particular easier access from above, as it’s always easier going downhill. The view here from the top gate shows the broad and wide stone steps that transition down through what is a very steep section of the garden. A n option exists to take a moment and wander left towards a small viewing deck with tucked away views out across the Firth of Forth. the planting has elements of a green roof structure and planting, giving the steep and exposed aspects of the location</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Arthurs Seat hillside garden, Edinburgh. - An immediate sense of established.</image:title>
<image:caption>Part of the client brief was to continue the naturalised feel of the existing garden and settle the garden studio into it’s surroundings. Our ethos of re-using all existing materials and rebuilding the new garden space out of the old garden, goes a long way towards helping a garden establish quickly. Here the new naturalised garden on the northern slopes of Arthurs Seat in Edinburgh, has a very settled and established look as it it enters it enters Autumn in it’s first year.</image:caption>
